Michael Holmans

Michael started playing the horn when he was eleven in Denton Tx, progressing thru Jr High and High School, where he played Symphonic band, Marching band and Stage Band, playing Solo and Lead positions. He took lessons from Leonard Candelaria, former head of the UNT trumpet department thru most of Jr High and High school and also Clay Jenkins of the 1:00 Lab band at the time. Michael got his start with music theory in a high school course. In younger years, he also took piano from UNT professors, developing basic classical music training. Many credits go to his parents - Charlie Holmans, who learned to play piano by ear, Priscilla, who was classically trained on piano, and his brother Charlie III, who is a drummer and percussionist.

College days were spent at Texas A&M, but despite the perceived lack of music in College Station, Michael formed a Jazz combo "Scrapple" and played at the Backstage Restaurant as a house band for three years, the Alamo as a house band and in a New wave band "Baggy Trousers" his senior year, playing as a backup band and Ska band for special events and parties. In addition, he was a member of the Texas A&M Symphonic band and Texas A&M Jazz Ensemble. Off semesters were spent playing in a Rehearsal big band at Brookhaven  College.

Once out of college, Michael continued to play mostly at church off and on, playing for enjoyment and keeping his gift of music alive, but looking for that Jazz opportunity while keeping busy with career and family. Most recently, he joined up with past work associates and got back into the swing of playing Jazz.

Main influences have included Freddie Hubbard, Bill Chase, Chuck Mangione, Miles Davis, UNT Jazz Lab Bands, Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Severinson, Wynton Marsalis, and Chet Baker. Other influences have been Jazz Fusion bands and R&B bands such as Weather Report, Larry Coryell's 11th House, Billy Cobham, Blood Sweat and Tears, Tower of Power and the Average White Band.  Michael's horns of choice are those he has had since the early days - a 1973 LA Series Benge professional trumpet, a 1978 Vintage YF731 "Chuck Mangione" Flugelhorn, and a Yamaha 6810S Piccolo trumpet for occasional wedding gigs.
